Notice to keepers
Penfield Mk IV: firmware 4.2.1 and the Almanac
· Seattle
Following the suspension of the license for the Penfield Mk IV yesterday, every registered instrument will receive firmware 4.2.1 tonight, between 1 and 4 a.m. in the keeper’s own time zone. Instruments that are switched off will receive it when next switched on. Nothing is required of keepers.
What 4.2.1 changes
- The Almanac is withdrawn. Any settings scheduled in it are cleared, and the Almanac window shows a hatched shutter. Registers may still be set by hand.
- Registers V.5 to V.8 of the Gravity family, which lie below the wellbeing threshold, are locked. The confirmation key will turn but will not engage.
- Any instrument currently set to one of those registers will return, over ninety minutes, to register VI.6, Recovery.
- All other registers, and the instrument’s ordinary settings, are unaffected.
What 4.2.1 does not change
4.2.1 does not collect, send or delete any record of your settings. The license forbids the Association to sell or share usage data, and we do not. The settings history held on your instrument remains on your instrument, where the Registry’s auditors may ask to read it with your permission and in your presence.
If you would rather return your instrument than keep it in this condition, the Association will refund its full purchase price, whatever its age. Write to penfield@rosenassociation.org.
