Eldon Rosen was born in Seattle in 1949 and entered the house at sixteen as an apprentice in the movement shop, where his first task, which took a year, was to file a single escapement wheel until the Master of the Atelier could find nothing to say about it. He was elected an Associate in 1979, the year he designed the tone cabinet that became the first Penfield instrument.

He was elected President in 1988, on the retirement of his father, Linus Rosen, and has been re-elected at every seven-yearly election since: in 1995, 2002, 2009, 2016 and 2023.

His presidency has been the most productive in the house’s history and, by his own account, the most instructive. He commissioned the Nexus studies in 1996 and the Owl in 2008, opened the Works at Everett in 2019 and brought the Penfield line to its fourth mark in 2024. He recalled the Nexus-6 in 2024. “It is the plainest decision I have had to make, and the least welcome.”

Mr. Rosen answers to the Turing Registry for each of the Association’s three filings, a duty he regards as the most serious of his office. He lives at the House, keeps the Owl’s winding key and answers letters personally. He does not give interviews.

A thing that is mistaken for a living creature has not failed. Neither is it finished. It is finished when it has been declared.

Rachael Rosen joined the house in 2017 and was elected to its Court of Directors in 2021, the youngest director in the Association’s history. She leads the Provenance Office, which writes, signs and keeps the certificate that accompanies every Rosen piece, and she speaks for the house in public.

She is a frequent speaker on authenticity, at universities, museums and gatherings of people who make, sell and judge things that are not what they appear to be. Her argument, put simply, is that the honest maker of a convincing object owes the world a record of how it was made, and that the dishonest one is distinguished not by skill but by silence. Her essay “On being mistaken for a machine” appeared in the Synthetic Minds Review in 2025.

Miss Rosen is a director of Frothly, the independent research institute in San Francisco, and serves on its board in a personal capacity. In keeping with Frothly’s rules she takes no part in the board’s discussion of matters concerning the Association, and she recused herself when the Turing Registry suspended the Penfield Mk IV in July 2026. She has asked Frothly’s board to give provenance standards for synthetic media an earlier place on its agenda, and is glad to report that it did.

She was born in Seattle and educated privately. She is the President’s niece.

Ottilie Brandvold came to the house in 1984 as an apprentice feather-setter, the last trade still taught entirely by hand. She was elected an Associate in 1998 and became Master of the Atelier in 2006, the twelfth person and the fourth woman to hold the office.

She led the making of the Rosen Owl, the replica bird shown in the Salon, from its commission in March 2008 to its completion in October 2019, and personally set 640 of its 2,206 feathers. Under her the Atelier trained the makers who staffed the Works at Everett and the Penfield Works, and made the first hand of every Nexus series.

As Master she signs the second line of every certificate of provenance, after the maker of record and before the Registrar, and she sets the final test of every apprentice. In twenty years as Master she has failed four, and has written to each of them every Christmas since.

Agnes Thorvald joined the house as Treasurer in 2012 after twenty-two years as finance director of a shipyard in Tacoma, where she learned, she says, that anything worth building costs more than the drawing and takes longer than the contract.

She is responsible for the Association’s accounts, which are presented to the Council of Associates every March, and for the house reserve, which the Articles require to be sufficient to service every Rosen piece in existence for twenty-five years without a single further sale. The reserve has met that test every year since 1946. It was drawn upon, as intended, to fund the Nexus-6 recall.

Tobiah Wren is an enameler and dial engraver who has worked at the house since 1991. The Articles reserve one seat on the Court of Directors for an Associate elected by the others, to make sure, in the words of the 1911 text, “that the bench is heard at the table.” He was elected to it in 2023.

In 2022 he cut by hand the steel master from which every Penfield Mk IV dial was engraved at the Penfield Works: 61,412 dials in all. When the master is not at Everett, he keeps it in his apron pocket.

Constance Ebbing was born in Bremerton in 1961 and spent twenty-six years building aircraft interiors in Everett, latterly as head of a plant of nine hundred people, before the house asked her in 2022 to build it a second works. She is the first director of the Association who did not train at its benches, and the Court amended nothing to admit her; the Articles had simply never required it.

The Penfield Works opened in August 2023 in the old net loft on the same waterfront site as the Works at Everett: two assembly halls, a dial shop working from Tobiah Wren’s master and nine tuning rooms modeled on the Penfield Room at the House. Between April 2024 and July 2026 it made 61,412 instruments, each tuned by hand by one of its thirty-seven tuners.

Production stopped on 3 July 2026. Ms. Ebbing kept every member of the Works on full pay, moved the assembly staff to servicing and to the refunds the house has offered keepers, and asked the tuners to retune, at no charge, any instrument a keeper sent in. She reports to the Court each month on the Works’ readiness to resume, and has said that she will not resume a single instrument until the audit says what the instrument should be.

Desmond Achterberg is the house’s Registrar, the officer who keeps the Register of Provenance and signs the final line of every certificate the Association issues. The Register has been kept without a break since the first entry on 14 March 1911. It runs to forty-three bound volumes and, since 1998, a second, digital copy that is checked against the first every night.

Before joining the house in 1997 he was an archivist at a university library in Leiden. He has been Registrar since 2003. He is courteous, exact and impossible to hurry, and the house would not have it otherwise.

Dr. Marguerite Okafor trained as a neurophysiologist and spent a decade studying sleep and affect before joining the house in 2014 to lead the development of the Penfield Mk IV. She is responsible for the instrument’s forty-eight registers, the calibration of each and the Almanac that lets a keeper set them in advance.

Since the suspension of the Mk IV’s license on 3 July 2026 she has led the Association’s work with the Turing Registry’s dosage audit, and she writes the notices to keepers published on this site. She continues to use her own instrument, within the registers the suspension permits.

Ingrid Halvorsen-Vey came to the house in 2019 to open the Works at Everett, where every Nexus-6 unit was commissioned. When the line was recalled on 1 December 2024 she asked to remain at Everett to lead the recall, and the Works became the Recall Office the following January.

The office reports the progress of the recall to the Turing Registry each month, and publishes a summary on this site. As at 31 October 2026, 2,309 of the 2,318 units commissioned had been recovered. She has said she will consider the work finished when the last figure is the same as the first.

Paulette Reyes leads Keeper Services, which registers the keepers of Rosen pieces, arranges their servicing and answers their letters. The house has 87,316 registered keepers, among them every keeper of a Penfield instrument of any mark and a small number of families who have kept the same heritage piece since before the First World War.

She joined the house in 2008 from the restoration department of a museum of mechanical music, and still restores one heritage piece a year herself, “to stay honest.”

Lionel Strand is the Association’s General Counsel and the Secretary who keeps its Articles, records its resolutions and conducts its elections. He is the great-grandson of Lena Strand, the jeweler among the founders who designed the house mark, and the only descendant of a founder other than the Rosens still working at the House. He trained at a Seattle firm specializing in maritime law and joined the house in 2001.

He has represented the house before the Turing Registry on each of its three filings, drafted the Association’s request of February 2024 that the Owl be registered, and acts for the house in the Registry’s dosage audit of the Penfield Mk IV.
