For keepers

Servicing and restoration

The house shall keep the means to mend whatever it has made. It services every Rosen piece for as long as the piece exists, and every piece is due a full overhaul in its seventh year.

Servicing for life

Servicing is free to registered keepers for every piece made since 1979, including every Penfield instrument of any mark. Heritage pieces made before 1979 are serviced at cost, at the rates in the schedule below, which the Council of Associates fixes each March. The cost of servicing is met from the reserve, which Article VIII requires to be large enough to service every piece the house has made for twenty-five years without another sale.

The seven-yearly overhaul

In its seventh year, and every seventh year after, a piece is taken down to its parts, cleaned, inspected, oiled and reassembled. Worn parts are remade from the original drawings, and feathers, leather and silk are renewed as needed. The overhaul is recorded on the piece’s certificate with the names of the makers who carried it out. Keeper Services writes to the keeper when an overhaul falls due.

Sending a piece

Write to Keeper Services with the certificate number and the reason for the visit. For Penfield instruments the house sends a padded case and a prepaid label; Mk IV instruments go to the Penfield Works in Everett, older instruments to the House. Larger pieces are collected by the house’s own carriers from anywhere in the continental United States and Canada, and from Switzerland through the Zürich Salon. Pieces are insured from the moment they leave you until they are returned.

Restoration

The house restores pieces it made before 1979, whoever now keeps them, and has restored some made by other houses where it could establish their history. Restoration begins with the piece’s certificate and the makers’ notebooks in the Archive; the house will not restore a piece whose history it cannot establish. Where a part must be remade, it is marked as a replacement with its year, so that the next keeper knows.
