From the house

A master for forty-eight registers

Tobiah Wren, the house’s senior engraver, has finished the master for the dial of the Penfield Mk IV, after fourteen months at his bench. It is a disc of hardened steel, a little larger than a saucer, on which he has cut by hand the forty-eight registers, their six family names and the house mark, in reverse and to a depth of four hundredths of a millimeter.

Every Mk IV dial will be engraved from it. Mr. Wren estimates that it will make about seventy thousand dials before it needs recutting, and has said that he intends to recut it himself.

The registers of the Gravity family below the wellbeing threshold are marked on the master with a fine cross-hatch, so that they are distinguished on the dial itself and not only in the handbook. Mr. Wren proposed this. The Penfield division agreed at once.
